High Fidelity was a gem of a show. In no way was it what I expected from the Harriton Theatre Company’s first production in the brand new high school. In, fact it was a fantastic performance, it made me want to get out of my seat and join the cast as they had the times of their lives on that stage.
This show follows Rob Gordon (Matt Glick), an owner of a record store. His employees are the quirky and awkward Dick (Peter Marshall) and melodramatic rocker Barry (Jake Ohlbaum), they trudge on through life, waiting for something good to come their way. Rob’s girlfriend Laura (Gabrielle Schwab) just left him. He is in costant denial about how much she meant to him, and in no way wants to give in and put her on his “Top Five” list.
What is this list you ask? This list is comprised of the girls who’ve caused Rob the most heartbreak in his life. These girls, sassy and full of attitude, are constantly popping into Rob’s concious, tormenting him with his breakup and what he’s going to do with his life and all of its problems. While he tries to win Laura back, he’s opposed by Ian, a ex-neighbor who is trying to woo Laura.
This cast was fantastic, and the band led by Junior and Sports Editor Daniel Carp played wondefully. Junior Matt Glick and Freshman Gabrielle Schwab gave outstanding vocals to this great score. Sophomore Emily Featherman, who played Rob’s sassy friend Liz, won over the crowd with her soulful, powerful number. James Butler, as hippie therapist Ian gave a eerily comical performance. Peter Marshall and Jake Ohlbaum not only gave strong vocal performances, but had the crowd laughing at every turn, making this a true musical comedy.
And the Top Five! Played by Julia James, Schuyler Silverman, Annette Omalley, Kasie Patlove and Hiba Ansar, these girls gave background vocals to kill for and fantastic performances as Rob’s heartbreaks. Other standout performers included senior Brooke Lewinter, as nightclub singer Marie LaSalle and Junior Alex Cooper as Bruce Springsteen as well as Neil Young.
Our beloved IB coordinator and Spanish teacher, Mr. O’brien also made a cameo as “The middle aged, square guy,” decked out in trench coat and briefcase. With assistant directors in Junior Jaime Toplin and Senior Brian Kluger, this show may have started out small, but it definitely left its mark.
If you didn’t manage to catch a showing of High Fidelity, which aired in the Black Box from November 19th to 22nd, then you truly missed out on a show that had us rolling in the aisles.
