Sam Smith’s Rise to Fame

While listening to the radio you have probably heard the songs “Latch” and “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith. So, who is this British, blue-eyed beauty with an angelic voice?

His career actually started when he first began making music at the age of 12. However, Sam Smith caught the attention of music listeners all around the world in 2012 when he was featured on Disclosure’s single “Latch.” The song peaked at number 11 on the UK Single’s chart. One year later he was nominated for and won the BRIT Critics’ Choice Awards, BBC Sound, and MOBO Best Song and Best Video.

This past May, Smith released his first album In the Lonely Hour. He describes the album as “all about unrequited love” because he has never been loved back by any of his love interests. Smith also stated that the album is “about a guy that I fell in love with…and he didn’t love me back.”

While writing the album, he wanted to make sure that the gender of his lover was unknown to the listener, thus allowing anyone to be able to relate to the underlying messages of his music.

In this past year alone, Smith’s singles have been at the top of the charts. He has performed at music festivals all around the world, and he has been nominated for countless awards. During his incredible rise to fame, Smith and his crew took hundreds of videos of their adventures. The videos were then assembled into a music video for his song “Restart”.
