As the 2014-15 school year settles in, Harriton’s many new programs have fallen seamlessly into our elite curriculum. With new classes, new coaches, and new focuses, the Harriton course lineup may look a bit different this year.

IB Theatre

The International Baccalaureate program here at Harriton is now offering a course in theatre, which centers around theatre theory, and specific scripts. Students will also create an original production.

This elective has been added to the extensive list that IB offers, including IB Psychology, IB Visual Arts, IB Economics, and IB Music.

Mr. O’Brien comments on the program’s role in Harriton culture, “This is a community that values theatre; Harriton has a long tradition of producing outstanding shows! This course, available to all students whether they are in IB or not, engages students in an exploration of theatre in a more formal context.”

SAT Prep Courses—Math and English

As standardized test scores become more and more important for colleges, Harriton has taken a jump on preparing students to succeed.

Both Prep courses, Math and Critical Reading & Writing, aim to increase a students SAT score through strategies to improve multiple choice and essay writing. Students will take multiple practice SAT exams throughout the course to further improve their score.

Advanced Entrepreneurship

This new course provides students with the necessary skills to create and present a practical business plan. The class even challenges students to begin to develop a business while still in high school.

According to the High School Planning Guide, the course goal is to help students, “Foster success in current and future ventures,” in business.

AP Physics 1

This new course in Physics focuses on six Big Ideas, relating to scientific principles, theories, and processes.   Approximately 25 percent of class time is reserved for lab activities in which students will pose questions, observe, inquire and investigate to analyze data and form arguments.

IB French A: Literature SL (Part 2)

This new IB course is extra special. It’s online! Students with a native language of French can work at their own pace to complete the course.

“Teaching this class online affords students added flexibility in scheduling while meeting the expectations of IB. The teacher is one of our own, so she can gather the students together whenever she likes, or our French A students can see her whenever they would like to”, shares Mr. O’Brien.

Mr. Eveslage shares his excitement for this school year, “I get excited about every school year because every group of kids brings new identity – new ideas, new accomplishments, and new challenges. I really enjoy seeing our students and teachers in action – working together to learn and grow.”

The entire Lower Merion community is a diverse, reflective, and innovative environment where education is truly changing. These new ideas may be a leap of faith, but they are sure to cultivate a thoughtful, productive, and successful group of future leaders.
