New Club Fosters Political and Community Involvement

Should public schools be required to offer organic food choices? Is Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 tax plan better than Rick Perry’s flat tax plan? If you feel strongly about these subjects and more, Harriton’s Junior State of America (JSA) may be the club for you.

Founded by Phil Hayes, Jack Ebby, Jerome Krumenacker and Alec Beckman, JSA gives Harriton students a unique opportunity to discuss what’s happening in the world.

“What’s great about Harriton students is that they care about school, community, educational, and political policies,” says Hayes. “It’s essentially a club where students can involve themselves in our government through debates and discussions, hearing from public officials and more.”

Examples of other activities include the following: helping local political causes; participating in fundraisers; volunteering for voter registration drives; and attending JSA conventions.

To join JSA, visit the club’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HarritonJSA and register your email under “Sign up.” Alternatively, you can join a meeting in Mr. Santa-Maria’s room Tuesdays after school.
