Parkway Runners Show Support for Cancer Research

On a warm September Sunday at 7:00am, roughly 8,000 people gathered at 19th Street and the Parkway in Philadelphia. They took off an hour and a half later en route around the Swann Memorial Fountain, down the Parkway to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and across West River Drive before returning to Logan Square. Upon completing the course, participants enjoyed a complimentary breakfast on the Ben Franklin Parkway. The distance: five kilometers. The goal: to raise money for Children’s Caner Research.

This annual Four Seasons Parkway Run & Walk has raised more than 3.5 million dollars towards research of new cures and the creation of a better quality of life for pediatric cancer survivors in the last six years. In 2010 alone, 72,000 runners and walkers raised more than 670,000 dollars. Estimates for the proceeds from the run on September 25, 2011 exceed last years, largely thanks to the great turnout at the race.

Harriton fall sports teams were all encouraged to show their support and come out for the race. “It was touching to see the families and teams of those who have lost children or whose children are vigorously fighting their cancer at the race,” comments participant Jenny Langer (grade 10). “The cheering and smiles of the people I passed along the path inspired me to keep running…especially the Rocky impersonator in front of the Art Museum.”

All who attended would agree that the race was a remarkable success. Not only was the Four Seasons Parkway Run & Walk impressive in numbers of participants and money raised, but also in the moving support of those enthusiastic about benefiting The Cancer Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
