Rams Football Defeats Rival Aces in Season Opener

Rams+Football+Defeats+Rival+Aces+in+Season+Opener

On a muggy afternoon on September 3rd, the Harriton Rams football team kicked off their season by paying a visit to rival Lower Merion. Despite opening the game with a botched kickoff, the Rams, led by sophomore quarterback Pat Moriarty, drove down the field and scored the first points of the game on a short run by senior running back Spencer Reid. Reid, who transferred from St. Joseph’s Prep, proved to be Harriton’s biggest offensive weapon as he dashed for another touchdown later in the quarter on an impressive 75-yard run. Moriarty successfully carried over the momentum to the second half, tossing two touchdown passes to junior Ryan Kelly and senior Mike Allen, who was praised by coaches for his versatility, en route to a comfortable 28-0 lead. The Aces were shut down offensively, failing to score until late in the game on Harriton’s second-string defense. The Rams left Arnold Field with a 28-6 victory in a game full of firsts— Moriarty’s first career start, Reid’s first game in a Harriton uniform, and the team’s first Central League win since beating the Aces 25-22 in 2008. Next week the Rams will travel to face the Strath Haven Panthers, hoping to avenge last season’s loss and establish themselves as early contenders in the Central League.
