In the wake of Ben and Leslie’s engagement (revealed in episode 5, “Halloween Surprise”), Leslie has planned an engagement party for Ben and her. A lovely idea on her part soon turns to disaster when Ben’s divorced parents (Jonathan Banks as Steve Wyatt and Glenne Headly as Julia Wyatt) are together in the same room.
Many laughs ensue when a quilt Leslie made in an attempt to bring the two families together is defaced by Ben’s father’s new woman, a dour young Hawaiian woman named Ulani (Kulap Vilaysack). Ulani means cheerful, which she isn’t.
Meanwhile, Chris takes another ride on the emotional roller coaster and is cheered up by April and Andy. This season’s continuing development of Chris is entertaining, but one does wonder when it will be resolved.
Tom Haverford works hard on his new business model with his partner-in-crime Jean Ralphio (played by Ben Schwartz) with mixed results. Will Jean Ralphio’s facetious attitude disgust Ron to the point where he won’t give Tom any startup capital?
All in all, a solid episode of “Parks and Rec”. Its main intention was to get the plot moving, but it was still entertaining enough to watch.
Next week: Leslie vs. April.
