Every Harritonite is feeling it — that post-holiday depression. We can no longer turn to endless tins of peppermint bark and snowman cookies to escape from our day-to-day stresses. But it’s a new year, and I suggest turning away from food and sinking your teeth into the highly anticipated season two of the HBO series Girls, which will return on Sunday, January 13 at 9 p.m.
Some of us are already dedicated watchers, but for those who have never seen the show, allow me to bring you up to speed:
Girls is a refreshing and comedic series that follows the lives of four young women, Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke), and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), living in New York City.
Together, the four leading ladies embody many of the most identifiable issues of our generation, from finally being cut off from parental funds to attempting to attain a job along with a functional social life. Each character is charming in her own way — Hannah is witty and self-deprecating, Marnie is beautiful and smart, Jessa is a free-spirited European, and Shoshanna is adorably spastic and unpredictable.
Lena Dunham, the writer, director, and star of the show, promises more of what millions of fans loved from season one to come in season two. Still, there will be a few minor changes as the characters mature and the dimensions of the show widen. With some familiar characters left behind and some new personalities thrown into the mix (look out for Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino), season two of Girls is worth adding to your weekly queue.
