“Problem” by Ariana Grande
From the radiant and talented vocalist that brought hits such as “The Way” and “Baby I” comes Ariana Grande’s next soon-to-be summer hit “Problem,” featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.
The single (that comes from her upcoming second studio album) is just as hip-shaking as her previous songs, but with a more mature topic. The lyrics tell the story of a girl whose only problem is a certain someone. However, she is not yet willing to end it then and there. While the music is still pure bubblegum-pop, the lyrics are a little more racy — putting the songstress in a riskier situation, while still maintaining a sense of innocence.
Much like her first album, the song is nineties inspired with a mysterious man whispering “I got one less problem without you,” an infectious beat that gets the listener dancing almost immediately, and a tremendous amount of sax that adds more texture and layers to the track. Azalea’s rapping skills are put to good use, with her sometimes over-the-top yet altogether charming effort. There is even an allusion to the famous Jay-Z song “99 Problems.” Not only does her rap help the song’s vintage feel, but it also creates a more women-empowered theme, with two strong females joking around about their boy troubles.
Fans and critics can hope that if this if this is the music Ariana Grande is crafting now, then her next album will receive ubiquitous praise.
