PB&J Club (Without the Peanut Butter and the Bread)
There are plenty of clubs at Harriton to satisfy anyone’s interests and curiosity. There are so many, in fact, that lots of these great activities go unknown in the student community. Did you know that there is a chess club? Or physics Olympics? Or even a Jam Club? The last one probably caught your attention, and right now you might be asking yourself, “What the heck is Jam Club?” Well, Jam Club is an awesome club (obviously) where students are able to explore their musical interests and jam out!
Jam Club was created a few years ago by Ben Levin and Troy Berkowitz (now graduated) when they were freshmen. Elena Isenberg is now the leader of the club and was more than helpful in getting me to understand what makes Jam Club so unique. The club meets every Wednesday in Mr. Joseph’s room from 2:40-3:30. And unlike some of the other musical groups and clubs around school, you don’t need to tryout for Jam Club. All you need is an instrument, an understanding of rhythms, and you’re good to go.
Once everyone is there and ready, the group gathers in a circle and begins to play. Dr. McKenna even leads the group sometimes! During the first few minutes, people mostly play chords, but once the group has it down, individuals can start playing different rhythms or even play solo.
Jam club is ideal for anyone who likes music. Elena Isenberg informed me that, “contrary to popular belief, it’s not just for guitars! We have bongos, a piano, some bass players, and Kieran Khurana played the violin for us before squash season started.” She also told me that her favorite part of the club is, “when we play a song that everybody knows and likes and people sing along or hum. It just looks really happy.”
So there you have it! Jam Club is a friendly and happy environment to de-stress from school and jam out to fun rhythms and beats with an awesome group of people.
