Describe Your Character! An Interview with Jon Duska and Jon Zamsky
The HTC Spring Musical for 2016 is How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. You may have heard about H2$ when it was on Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter), Darren Criss or Nick Jonas. How to Succeed is set in the 1960s, and is all about a clever man named Finch who works his way to the top of the company. Along the way he faces the president of the company, the boss’ nephew, the boss’ mistress and his future wife. We interviewed two of the show’ leads, Jon Duska, who plays Finch, and John Zamsky, who plays Bud Frump (the boss’ nephew).
Describe your character.
JD: Finch is low class, blue-collar guy who finds a book that teaches him how to take over a big business company.
JZ: Bud is a five-year old trapped inside of an adult. He is entitled, sarcastic, and doesn’t understand how to make it in the world except for using nepotism.
He’s basically a baby sibling who cries all the time.
Why is this production unique?
JD: This is my last show, and our director has some really great ideas.
JZ: It has a taste of funny and seriousness while teaching morals. We also have a great director, Neill, and it’s our first musical with him. Overall, everyone is doing a great job putting the show together.
What is your favorite scene?
JD: I’m not sure. There are so many great ones.
JZ: “Paris Original”(Editor’s note: a song where all of the women accidentally wear the same dress)- I like to imagine this situation in prom and how certain people would react.
What are the main reasons people should come to see the show?
JD: Its hilarious and so funny. The jokes are layered in and after a while, you can’t stop laughing because there is so much going on and it’s uncontrollable.
JZ: You cannot stop laughing. There are so many jokes and you want understand them, but you won’t get them until after the show, and you’ll go “oh yeah!” and also flax mora.
How did you decide to represent your character/ create them?
JD: Finch is manipulative. Most people don’t see that because he’s very charming, and you assume he’s the good guy. If you really pay attention, you can see that he uses everyone to get to the top. It’s very different from other shows.
JZ: I have a five-year-old sister and I studied her for a week, to see what she did when she wanted something and how she acted. I hope you can see my influences and inspirations. Also Spielberg
