Wawa: The Cult
People who don’t know of Wawa might think it to be some convenience store like
7-Eleven or something typical. But everyone who has been in a Wawa and is part of its
fan base knows it is something special and very different, certainly not typical.
High school students may in fact make up the largest percent of those fans. It
makes sense: all the foods they offer are practically all the highlights and more of the
glory days of the breakfast table. It is not uncommon to hear a high school student wish,
“Uggg I wish I had a (insert: Milkshake, Hoagie, Candy, Smoothie, etc.) from Wawa,”
or declare, “Let’s go to Wawa!” For example, Catherine Liu’s favorite purchase is a
Frozen Frappucino and Alisa Sckolna goes to Wawa about once a week.
Of course people unfamiliar with Wawa, probably wonder what the heck Wawa
is or maybe even wonder why you want to go to (visit?) a Canada Goose –what the store
is named after. But all regulars automatically pity these poor, inexperienced foreigners
unacquainted with this haven. Kate Levin says, “It was surprising,” when she found out
Wawa was only on the East Coast and mainly in this area and that if she did not have
access to a Wawa she would be “forced to spend a lot of money on coffee at Starbucks.”
Recently, Wawa released a new menu item: pizza. Twenty years ago this launch
was unsuccessful but Wawa was hoping for a better result this time. However, already,
there are negative results coming in that the pizza is a pathetic excuse for pizza. Despite
such reviews, Wawa customers are still accepting and purchasing pizza of this quality,
only proving their dependence and attachment to the chain. Rebecca Li says, “The Wawa
pizza is a good late night snack when you just want a quick, hot meal. Its insanely fluffy
but also super greasy. Though it’s not that great, it’s Wawa and that’s probably why I’ll
continue to buy it.”
The fact that Wawa’s reign continues without undulation, even with flawed menu
items or offerings, proves the enormous amount of power Wawa has over its customers.
