October of this year marked the 70th birthday of one of the most influential people
of the 20th century. Unfortunately, he’ s been dead for almost 30 years. John Lennon,
lead singer of the Beatles and later solo artist, was born on October 9, 1940, and was
assassinated in front of his New York City apartment on December 8, 1980, at just 40
years of age. Although he’ s been gone from this world for quite some time, not a day
goes by when a song by him isn’ t played on the radio. Who knows what would have
happened if he were around to celebrate his 70th year? Perhaps he would have continued
writing music into his old age, or been present for a Beatles reunion. It remains a
mystery, but we can still listen to his music and cut a slice of cake to celebrate.
