“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” Even though the Greek Philosopher Plato spoke this over two thousand years ago, Musicopia is applying his words to our world today, and is using them to improve the betterment of our surrounding communities.
A nonprofit organization, Musicopia works with musicians in the area to offer music education programs to students and communities throughout the Greater Philadelphia area, especially to those who do not have sufficient access to music programs in school. By holding assemblies and workshops for underprivileged students, and giving them the chance to perform in a joint student-instructor concert, Musicopia hopes to, “inspire a deep love and knowledge of great music, promote the transformative powers of music, the value of musical discipline, and an appreciation of cultural diversity.”
Part of their philosophy is that no student should be denied the chance to play an instrument, just because they can’t afford one. Instrument donations are needed to keep this part of their organization alive, with any and all instruments being accepted, regardless of condition. Three of the seventeen drop-off locations are in Harriton’s vicinity, with two in Ardmore at Autowerks Ardmore and Music Training Center, and the other in Conshohocken, at the Music Training Center. Also, you can host your own instrument drive by coordinating with a local business and contacting Musicopia.
You can additionally contribute to this great cause by donating money or volunteer time. For more information on how you can specifically help, visit their website at http://www.musicopia.net/index.php.
