Penny Drive Supports Cancer Research, Now through 2/27

Recently, the Harriton Service League launched the annual Penny Drive, a campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Pennies for Patients” program, which raises funds for blood cancer research and services for patients.

This year’s drive was launched in conjunction with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and will directly contribute to the society’s expenditures. Leukemia is a disease of special relevance to high school, as it is the leading fatal cancer in persons under the age of 20.

The Pennies for Patients program has existed since 1994 and has since raised millions of dollars from students across the country in the form of spare change, although all forms of currency are accepted. The top contributing schools receive prizes, such as computers, electronics, and sports equipment.

This year’s Penny Drive has invigorated Harriton’s altruistic and charitable spirit; Service League members could be seen enthusiastically delivering collection boxes to each advisory room last Monday. Mr. Fritz, the coordinator of the drive and the advisor for the Harriton Service League, adds that the Service League “has participated in this Pennies for Patients event […] for the last eight years and hopes to continue the event for many years to come […]”

In past years, Harriton has successfully raised funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, through the annual Penny Drive, and anticipates another effective fundraising effort this year.

Help in the fight against cancer by contributing loose change to the Penny Drive box in your advisory. The Penny Drive ends on Friday, February 27th, so remember to donate this week – every penny counts!

Your monetary contributions are much appreciated and are desperately needed to battle leukemia and lymphoma, as over 40,000 people die annually from these cancers.

If you would like to volunteer to a greater extent with this program, contact Mr. Fritz or visit the Leukemia & Lymphoma society’s website at www.lls.org. For additional information about this drive, visit www.penniesforpatients.org or contact Mr. Fritz.
