Meet Secretarial Candidate, Nina Korman
We turned our eyes to the position of secretary, one of the most important positions up this election season. The secretary is in charge of the communications committee, which heads the communications between student council and the school and directs the art committee for Mr. Harriton. Nina Korman, who also is a member of HSL and Art Club, sat down with the Banner on Monday, 6 April to talk about her plans for Harriton and student council. She will be running against Noah Karpel in the general election, which is to be held later this month (exact dates are as of yet, undetermined).
HB: In your campaign video, you spoke of unifying the grades and clubs. What does this mean?
NK: With the collaboration, we can do better fundraisers at the Breakfast Table, some stuff can be done like Class Wars, which ultimately leads to more spirit. Individually, only so much can be done, but if you took, lets say, Art Club and Stock Club, more could be done there.
HB: What would this bring to the school?
NK: People could get involved; you could join a club if you found out about a certain event. I feel that more collaboration is important, because it would allow people to come together, leading to spirit.
HB: How attainable is this?
NK: I think it would depend on the clubs themselves, as I cannot control what they want to do. But I think that Class Wars would be something people would be interested in. People have been thinking about doing that last year, and I think that could certainly be done.
HB: What are these Class Wars?
NK: It would basically be spirit, some competitions, something like an Olympics with a winner at the end. It could be a fundraiser too. I know not everyone is into the sports, so it could be different activities, including something athletic and also more artistic … with lots of interests and not making it all athletics.
HB: Do you have any other ideas which you could bring to the school?
NK: Communications is really important, which is also what the secretary is in charge of. I’ve seen what works and what works well and what doesn’t. As a freshman, I remember not really knowing what was going on. I think, maybe a newsletter, something which gives you a setup of upcoming sports events, club meeting dates, just to that extent. The newsletter can be sent via emails, maybe on the TVs, and something along those lines which would bring more awareness.
HB: How about the calendar in the JSL?
NK: Not many people know about the calendar, so if we could find another space, we could have another calendar. I think the calendars should be used more, actually … I think it should be amped up a little bit.
HB: How would you urge people to participate?
NK: I think its important that everyone has a voice and not be afraid that their voice not be heard. I think its a matter of just being there for them. Student council should come up with a way to make everyone’s voice heard and make everyone’s ideas count.
HB: What experience do you have in Student Council?
NK: I joined up in sophomore year and have been in communications for both years. But this year, I was actually Jane’s co-chair, which was really awesome and I learned a ton, as it was a nice step up, and let me be involved. Last year, I also worked backstage at Mr. Harriton and also this year. This is the same with the art committee, which I’ve been in for two years as well.
HB: What did your experience as co-chair teach you?
NK: I didn’t know all about the processes involved or what the secretary had to do. I knew that making posters was important, but this year, I learned that you had to go through Mrs. Marcuson and all the things involved in getting things approved and all the responsibilities at council meetings. Also, I learned about how important it was to be on task and organized with Mr. Harriton especially. It was really great this year; we got everything done early and really well paced. I learned a lot about what it takes and the responsibility that the secretary has.
HB: What is your favorite part of Harriton?
NK: I really like how you don’t really have to just be friends with people in your grade. I know that’s kind of weird, and that most people want to stay within their core group of friends, but I have so many other friends in the other grades.
HB: What does the secretary do?
NK: The secretary is involved with the communications, emails, recap of council meetings. Communications is the biggest aspect of it. The secretary is the head of Mr. Harriton’s Art Committee. It hangs up all the posters and logos for that too.
HB: Why should students vote for you?
NK: Students should vote for me because I am extremely qualified. I really think I could do a good job. I’ve seen so much this year with Jane. She’s been a really good person to follow. Even with shadowing her for Mr. Harriton art, I’ve learned so much. Even being her co-chair, I’m experienced in the communications committee, and I know how to lead it, how to be secretary, basically.
