As graduation approaches, so does another general election for Student Council. I recently realized that I did not know much about what Student Council officers do, so I interviewed each of them to find out more about their position. This is my third interview, with Julia Cognetti, the current Secretary:
The Harriton Banner: What is the biggest part of your role in Student Council?
Julia Cognetti: I think the biggest part of my role as Secretary is ensuring information gets to the student body. This means maintaining Instagram, getting posters up, and spreading word of events at the school. Also keeping track of notes at meetings.
THB: What characteristics do you think are important for this role?
JC: I think the most important thing is having good communication skills. Approachability is really important so that the student body knows that you can listen to their ideas. Organization and teamwork are also key.
THB: What is your favorite part of being in Student Council?
JC: My favorite part is getting to work with the other amazing officers to plan and complete projects for the school community. We have become such a close group of officers and it’s really enjoyable to work together. I also really love being able to create Instagram posts to share with the school.
THB: What do you think were your biggest achievements in Student Council this year?
JC: We created the Ram’s Rundown, which is a huge help to keeping track of sports schedules at Harriton. Also club grants are a way for clubs to get resources that they need. And of course Dr. Harriton raised over $61,000!
THB: What do you think next year’s Student Council leaders should prioritize?
JC: I think they should prioritize hearing everyone’s ideas to make the school community as good as it can be. Also, they should remember to enjoy all of it, because it’s really fun to be a part of!
