As graduation approaches, so does another general election for Student Council. I recently realized that I did not know much about what Student Council officers do, so I interviewed each of them to find out more about their position. This is my fourth interview, with Kyler Parker, the current Treasurer:
The Harriton Banner: What is the biggest part of your role in Student Council?
Kyler Parker: As Council’s Treasurer, running fundraisers is my primary job. My connections with other clubs at Harriton means that I’m often helping arrange joint initiatives, though, the Ardmore Food Pantry Drive with NHS and HSL being an example.
THB: What characteristics do you think are important for this role?
KP: Being a little bit obsessive has helped me achieve a lot as Treasurer. When I’m frequently wracking my brain to think of what I’m missing in accounting or project-planning, things are far less likely to slip by me. If not perfectionist, at the very least be detail-oriented; it’s imperative when you’re dealing with finances. Of course, I’m human; only a modicum of what I do would be possible without a robust system of checklists.
THB: What is your favorite part of being in Student Council?
KP: When we’re done putting together an event and I can just relax and watch my classmates enjoy–––it’s the entire reason I do Council.
THB: What do you think were your biggest achievements in Student Council this year?
KP: I’m exceptionally proud of the return of HSC Grants! This year, we’ve already given out over $4,000 to extracurriculars in need, paying for their trips, opportunities, and other new efforts to enrich the Harriton community, and there’s still one more grant cycle to come.
THB: What do you think next year’s Student Council leaders should prioritize?
KP: Keep improving the things that already exist and add your own touches to the school. If a little gets added every year, but there’s the utmost attention to making it as good as possible, Harriton will see huge improvements in the long term. It’s quality over quantity. Most importantly, have fun with it. If you enjoy working on it, the school will enjoy engaging with it!
