You probably know Oscar Pistorius as “The Blade Runner,” as he is the guy from the Olympics with double below-knee amputations. Most recently, he has filled the news as the guy who murdered his supermodel girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
After being charged with murder, Pistorius told the courtroom that he shot his girlfriend by mistake, as he thought it was a robber. The prosecutor declared it a premeditated murder. Pistorius defended the ruling as him feeling vulnerable since he did not have on his prosthetic legs and he wanted to protect both himself and his girlfriend. When he heard noises coming from the bathroom, he shot through the locked door.
As the guns were shot through the door, killing who Pistorius thought was a robber on the other side, he then realized that his girlfriend was not in bed. He then tried to kick down the door, only to find Steenkamp bleeding. In an attempt to save her, Pistorius brought her downstairs, but “she died in my arms,” says Pistorius.
From being charged with premeditated murder, Pistorius faces “the harshest bail requirements available in South African law,” according to CBS news.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court that Pistorius had used the gun after an argument between the couple, resulting in 4 gunshots, 3 hitting Steenkamp. Pistorius’s lawyer, Berry Roux, explained it was just an accident and there is no evidence of an intended murder. Although, Pistorius is currently sitting in jail while a bail is still being settled.
