The First Football Playoff Championship
Pretty much all NCAA sports have an NCAA national championship. Yet, in the NCAA’s arguably most-viewed sport, football, the existence of the national championship is a bit more ambiguous.
In years past, the National Championship has featured the top two ranked teams at the end of the season by the Associated Press. Setting a new precedent for years to come, the NCAA introduced the College Football Playoff, an event for which college football fans have been lobbying for a while. After the bowls were won and the trophies were presented, viewers were left with four teams: the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Oregon Ducks, the Florida State Seminoles, and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The matchups of Seminoles vs. Ducks, and Crimson Tide vs. Buckeyes were played on New Year’s Day. Fans everywhere were eagerly anticipating the first matchup of Oregon vs. Florida State because the two most recent Heisman trophy winners were facing off. Jameis Winston of Florida State won the award in 2013, while Marcus Mariota of Oregon took the honor in 2014. The Oregon Ducks ended up routing the Seminoles, 59-20, to punch their ticket to the national championship. The second game was much more closely contested, with the Ohio State Buckeyes upsetting the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-35 under the leadership of their third-string quarterback, Cardale Jones III. Jones was lauded for his leading the Buckeyes after many injuries at the quarterback position.
The national championship game between The Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes should be a good one. Both teams feature dynamic players and leadership that have gotten them to this point in the season. The Ducks are led by Heisman trophy winner, and dual-threat quarterback, Marcus Mariota, who threw for 4,121 yards and 40 touchdowns this season. Additionally, Mariota is a daunting task on the ground, as he has run for 731 yards and 15 touchdowns. Royce Freeman leads the Ducks in rushing, posting up 1,343 yards and 18 touchdowns. Wideout Byron Marshall leads the passing attack on the receiving end, with 834 yards and 5 touchdowns this season. They also boast a stout defense, ranking 27th in the FBS for Points Against, 22.3 per game.
Meanwhile, the Ohio Buckeyes’ offense is led by third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, who in limited action has thrown for 618 yards and 6 touchdowns. OSU dominates the ground with running back Ezekiel Elliott, who rushed for 1,632 yards and 14 touchdowns. Wide receiver Devin Smith leads the Buckeyes in receiving, with 886 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ohio State has a formidable defense as well, ranking 26th in the FBS for Points Against, with 22.1 per game.
The Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes are now slated to meet in the College Football Playoff Championship in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium. Be sure to have your television tuned in to ESPN on Monday, January 12, at 8:30 P.M. ET., to witness history!
