Boys’ Ice Hockey beats Stoga, gives LM a battle
Wondering what’s been happening with boys’ ice hockey? Here’s a recap of two of the most exciting games of the season:
The boys’ ice hockey team faced off against Conestoga in a nail biter!
Coming into the game, the Rams were optimistic of their chance for success after a 2-3 loss against Conestoga earlier in the season.
Both teams had a slow start, although the Rams finished the first period up 2-0, with goals scored by forwards Will DeVerter and Nick Wert.
In the second period, however, Conestoga quickly tied the game with two points against freshman goalie Alex Krauss. Nick Wert rebounded with a goal for the Rams, before Conestoga countered with another two goals, putting the Pioneers in the lead. The Rams, invigorated by a seemingly equal opponent, bounced back, with goals by freshman captain Skyler Thomas and forward Hunter Sporn, who put the Rams in the lead again with a minute left in the period.
Six minutes into the third period, Nick Wert and defenseman Alex Triester put in another two goals, all but securing the first win of the season for the Rams. The Pioneers scored in the last two and a half minutes, before Nick Wert netted the final goal of the game on an empty Conestoga net. Boys’ Ice Hockey was evidently exuberant to take home an 8-5 win.
After busting their 11-game losing streak, the Rams were looking forward to a rematch against their cross-district rival.
The Rams and the Aces faced off on the ice for an intense game. Lower Merion was expecting to win by a large margin in this contest after defeating Harriton 8-0 last time they faced each other. History would not repeat itself, however, as the Rams stepped up and fought hard.
At the end of the first period, the Rams were winning 3-1. By the end of the second period, the Aces were gaining, but still down 4-3. In the middle of the third period, however, Lower Merion scored 2 quick goals to give them the one-point edge that would ultimately become the difference-maker. The LM goalie made a last-minute save to keep the game from going into overtime and give the Aces the 5-4 win.
As has been happening in recent games, every member of the Harriton team stepped up and played very well. Both Nick Wert and Skyler Thomas scored a pair of goals, and goalie, Alex Krauss, stopped 19 of 24 shots that came his way. While the Rams did not win on the scoreboard, they consider this game to be a victory for themselves as a team and a sign that they are improving. This is a young team that is constantly improving and looks to be a force to be reckoned within the next couple of seasons.
