Harriton Hockey Finishes Strong
Coming off of two very exciting games, the boys’ ice hockey team was ready for another one as they took on Marple Newtown late on Friday night. Hoping to end the season on a high note, the Rams looked to defeat the winless tigers and jump out of last place in the Central League North.
The game got off to a slow start, scoreless until Nick Wert’s goal 13 minutes into the first period. Wert scored again 2 minutes later, and the period closed with the Rams ahead 2-0. Albert Bleznak scored early in the second period, but Marple was not going down without a fight, scoring 2 goals within 30 seconds of each other, to bring the halftime score to 3-2, Rams in the lead.
The Rams exploded in the second half with Albert Bleznak scoring his second goal of the night, Nick Wert completing a hat trick (3 goals), and the team’s captain, Skyler Thomas, scoring the final 2 goals for the Rams. Harriton’s offensive success was also coupled with stellar defense, limiting the Tigers to just 1 goal in the second half. Not only did Harriton out-score Marple, but they also out-shot them, putting 54 shots on net, while helping out their injured goalie and holding Marple to 15 shots. At the end of a hard fought night, the final score was 7-3.
With this victory, the Rams jump ahead of Conestoga in the Central League North standings, finishing the season with a record of 2-13-1 in the Central League, and 4-13-1 overall. Although the season was somewhat of a struggle, it is an improvement on the past two seasons. This is a young team with only one senior, so they have big expectations for the next few seasons to come. Great season, boys!
