Girls’ Tennis Completed Their Fall Season at the State Semi-Finals
The Harriton girls’ tennis team recently finished a memorable season with an impressive run to the state semi-finals.
After earning a 10-1 record in the Central League regular season, the girls advanced to districts, where they defeated Lower Merion and Downingtown East to qualify for states.
The tennis team started off strong in states, defeating Central High School and then Hempfield High School. The team’s run, however, ended in the state semi-finals against Shady Side Academy. Including the postseason, they finished with a record of 16-4.
This year, seniors Nell Jones, Sophia Kontra, Gabrielle Kontra, Peyton Miller, and Alex Ladda led the team.
“The captains this year did a really good job in bringing together a young team and being great leaders on and off the courts,” said Sonia Groeneveld, a junior on the team.
Younger players also showed promise: freshmen Sophie Sassoli, Connie Richards, and Nina Hoog finished the season undefeated.
This year marked the tennis team’s best season since moving up to the AAA division. Groeneveld believes there is even more to achieve.
“We definitely have the high potential to become state champs at some point in the next three years,” Groenveld commented.
