Looking for something to do this weekend? Come see Harriton Theater Company’s production of The Giver!
Based on the novel written by Lois Lowry, The Giver is a drama about our future in a society of “Sameness” — a world with no color or freedom of choice. It features a young boy named Jonas (played by Marcel Werder) who, after being given memories from the past when “Sameness” did not exist, is determined to restore society to the way it was before.
As the play progresses, Jonas’s mentor, The Giver (played by Virginia Vass), reveals secrets within the community that shock and even offend him. All the while, Jonas is faced with strange new feelings towards his female friend Fiona (played by Megan Rapuano) and his new responsibility to take care of Gabe — an infant who doesn’t seem to be cut out for life in this secluded community.
The Giver creates a frightening prediction of the future of mankind, causing the audience to wonder if today’s society is focused simply on the equality of each individual under the law, or if we are too focused on a path to “Sameness.”
Show times: Thursday, November 15 (7 p.m.), Friday, November 16 (7 p.m.), Saturday, November 17 (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.), and Sunday, November 18 (6 p.m.)
