Mr. Harriton 2014: Marcel Werder, Jason Herrmann, and Evan Rosen
Mr. Harriton 2014 is almost upon us, and here are our last three interviews with this year’s contestants, junior Marcel Werder, senior Jason Herrmann, and senior Evan Rosen. All of these boys have wit and killer personalities, making them fierce contestants for this year’s Mr. Harriton competition.
Marcel Werder, Junior
What is a day in your life like?
Well, I start my day by enduring the most dreadful event known to man, probably equal to the first circle of Hell: my alarm clock. After I am through that fiasco, I shower, get dressed, and spend approximately 84 minutes on my hair (it’s the moneymaker). Then I have three bowls of pasta, some ginger ale, and I’m ready for the day. After sprinting to the bus, I arrive at school. Alas, I fall asleep on the bus every morning and by the time I awake, they have taken the elementary school kids to school and I ask them to take me back to Harriton. I usually make it back in time for Set 3. After that, I spend the first 20 minutes of lunch talking with Claire, then get my lunch and eat it like a caveman in the last five minutes. I finish up the day, go to various rehearsals after school, then go home. After hours of work and phone activity, I review my stamp collection, eat four Tastykakes, and drift into slumber. Wash, rise, repeat.
Why did you try out for Mr. Harriton?
What I love about Mr. Harriton is that boys from all different activities and groups of friends come and are a part of this huge fundraising performance. And everybody up here, some athletes, some musicians, dances around and makes fools of themselves and everybody in the audience is cheering them on and supporting them. So I think that Mr. Harriton preaches the idea that one can do whatever they want to do and what they are interested in, and will still be supported by their peers and the Harriton community. It truly shows how all different kinds of people in our school can come together, each representing a part of Harriton, and create something amazing. And I thought it would be really awesome to be a part of that.
What is your favorite thing about Mr. Harriton so far?
It’s been really great getting to know all of the different contestants, as well as the escorts and coordinators. It’s awesome to make friends with people whose paths you might not have crossed otherwise. Oh, and the shimmying. Yeah, you can’t forget the shimmying.
Who is a competitor to watch out for (other than you)?
Ben Appel. With his impeccable charm and angelic voice, he’ll be a crowd favorite for sure. I’m watching out for him.
If you could choose the theme what would it be?
I really do like this theme, but if I had to pick a different one, I think a superhero theme might be cool. Then again, it could be awful. Who knows?!
Why are you the next Mr. Harriton?
I’d like to think that I could be the next Mr. Harriton because I try to involve myself in the school as much as I can. I think the more you put into Harriton, the more you’ll get out, so I think I represent a lot of different parts of the school, including Student Council, the Freshman Mentor Program, and various music groups. Also, I undoubtedly have the most swag out of all the competitors.
Personal Statement?
A haiku:
Plans for Friday night?
Oh, you have? Please cancel them.
Mr. H. Be there.
Jason Herrmann, Senior
What is a day in your life like?
The life of Jason Herrmann is action-packed and intense. From running down the halls with a sling bag, to popping in and out of classes, eating lunch, and greeting everyone I see, I try to keep every day fresh and exciting. Sometimes I carry an apple, and other days I have a bagel hidden in my left jacket pocket.
Why did you try out for Mr. Harriton?
Mr. Harriton is the culmination of four years at Harriton. For me it marks the peak of senior year. I thought it would be exciting to try out, and I guess they liked my pretty bad jokes, because here I am.
What is your favorite thing about Mr. Harriton so far?
Everyone and everything. I really appreciate the hard work everyone is putting in to making this a great event.
Who is a competitor to watch out for (other than you)?
Quincy. You have to be careful around Quincy.
If you could choose the theme what would it be?
I really like the time-travel theme, but I have to admit, a space theme would have been pretty awesome.
Why are you the next Mr. Harriton?
Why does the sun shine? Why are we traveling back in time? If we start to question these things, the whole universe will unravel. But actually, every contestant is great, and this is going to be an incredible show!
Personal Statement?
Be prepared for the unexpected; watch out world!
Evan Rosen, Senior
What is a day in your life like?
Take a shower, eat breakfast, drive to school, wake up, play flappy bird until I cry, pretend I belong in AP classes for a couple hours, get the usual from my girl Nancy in the cafeteria (potato bread, mayo, provolone, salami, lettuce), ball out in English (unless it’s an A day – then ball out in Latin), get ridiculously swole after school in the weight room (might play D1 football next year), then go home and watch One Tree Hill until I can’t feel my face.
Why did you try out for Mr. Harriton?
Lindsey Barrison threatened to hurt me physically if I didn’t try out. You haven’t seen her angry.
What is your favorite thing about Mr. Harriton so far?
My favorite thing about Mr. Harriton so far is the people I get to work with and the friendships I’m making. They’re all really talented and I thoroughly enjoy practicing with them everyday. Except David Bernstein. That kid is straight reckless. Just zero regard for other people’s feelings.
Who is a competitor to watch out for (other than you)?
One competitor to watch out for is definitely Ethan “Wafflekiller” Wolfe. He claims he just moved here from California like a couple weeks ago but he doesn’t speak much English and is always stealing food from the school cafeteria. I’m pretty sure he’s some kind of spy.
If you could choose the theme what would it be?
If I could choose the theme, it would have to be Harry Potter. Girls love Harry Potter.
Why are you the next Mr. Harriton?
Oh, I’m not the next Mr. Harriton. I don’t know who told you that, but they don’t decide until after we have the show and everything.
Personal Statement?
I’d like to give a quick shout out to my good friend Rich Ho. If you happen to see him, please tell him I love him and I miss him. Also, YSGM (Young Stave Getting Money) is a movement and we are going global. Lastly, if you see Justin Littman please let him know that I have his phone charger.
