RAM of the Week: Gideon Haber, Senior
When we walked into the library to do this interview, Gideon was standing around a table in the front. He was wearing Snoopy print pajama pants, and as soon as he saw us, he grinned from ear to ear.
He answered our questions without hesitation, not once questioning his gut answers. Gideon is one of the most genuine people that we have ever called the Ram of the Week. And as is the case with many like him, he is infectious. When he tells his stories, you feel the lighthearted, sort of casual joy that he tells them with. This ability means that he is good company, and great conversation. Here is what he had to say.
Emily: What’s your favorite thing about Harriton?
Gideon: Probably the people, like my friends I would have to say. In terms of education, there are a lot of teachers I like, so some specific teachers would be my favorite part of the education process. But in terms of schooling in general, definitely just hanging out with people.
Annika: If you could choose your own religion or philosophy of life, what would you chose?
Gideon: Thats tough.
Tess: Thats really tough.
Gideon: That just got deep! I don’t know… Buddhism sounds really cool, like really relaxing, and yoga sounds like fun. So maybe that. But I like the religion I currently am a part of, so maybe just Judaism.
Tess: What house are you?
Gideon: I kind of have to say Gryffindor because that’s the awesome house, but probably in reality like Ravenclaw. Hopefully not Syltherin.
Emily: What is your worst nightmare?
Gideon: Its probably that I have to stay somewhere forever. This is kind of weird, but like, if I’m sewed to something and then everyone around me dies then and I have to stay there forever.
*laughter explodes*
Tess: What?
Gideon: That sounds crazy but it was a nightmare I had in second grade or something ridiculous. It just stuck with me.
Annika: That is crazy. What is your favorite subject?
Gideon: Definitely science, I also like math. Mr O’s awesome. Ms Gehret is funny.
Emily: So speaking of science…what has your experience been like with Science Olympiad?
Gideon: Look at that segue. That was beautiful. I love it. I didn’t have a lot of friends coming into Harriton, I came from a private school so it was kind of hard to acclimate myself. But everyone in Science Olympiad was really friendly and open and cool. And also I love science. So its a good combination.
Emily: Is there any drama?
Gideon: There’s always drama. There are relationships and breakups, and it’s fun to spectate but to be a part of is not quite as enjoyable.
Tess: When you get home from school what is the first thing you do?
Gideon: Shove food in my face. That would have to be the first. This year definitely is to take a nap or watch TV, though I didn’t do that junior year. I have a really bad case of senioritis, so probably sleeping and eating. And if I have time I do work.
Annika: Whats your experience on the swim team?
Gideon: Well this year… I didn’t do as much swimming as one would have hoped. But my past two years on the swim team have been great. I like that there are no cuts and all that jazz. The people are cool. Exercising is not great. Good physical activity, I guess. This year though I was lacking. I think I went to 7 practices total. It was kind of a mess.
Emily: What is your ideal night?
Gideon: It would be pretty laid back. It would involve a movie, some friends, some family. And dancing, I really like to dance but I’m terrible at it.
Emily: Nice. What’s your favorite song to dance to?
Gideon: I dance to a lot of corny pop. But I will boogie down to whatever’s on the radio, so yeah, at the end of the night, it would be like crash a bar mitzvah! Or a wedding, and just go crazy.
Tess: Okay so its prom season, as I’m sure you know. What is your favorite prom asking you’ve ever been a part of?
Gideon: I’ve actually prom-asked a number of people now. I went to junior and senior prom my junior year and my sophomore year.
Tess: Kudos.
Gideon: Just as friends but it was fun. I guess I’ll just go through those. The first one she was really into Pokemon, so I knelt down onto one knee with a Pokeball and it said “Will you go to prom with me.” The second one was Science Olympiad related. She did an event with me called Forensics, which is like you have to identify a murderer. So I had a long piece of paper and I had my friend do a chalk outline of my body, and I laid down and stuck my tongue out. I had a box of chocolates with a question mark and a shirt that said “Prom” with a giant [check] box that said yes and a tiny one that said no. The last one asked was Emilie Ziess. She’s french so I made a sign and I dressed up as a french person, striped shirt, barret.
Tess: And a baguette?
Gideon: I’m actually known for carrying around a baguette, but no I left that out.
Emily: Wait. Why are you known for that?
Gideon: Because it’s just easy to carry around for lunch. People just tend to notice. So if you see me in the hallway, theres like a 15% chance I’m carrying a baguette.
Annika: Do you have a personal statement?
Gideon: What, just about life?
Annika: Yeah.
Gideon: Okay I’ll do a science quote. It’s kind of like science humor. Entropy isn’t what it used to be. Get it… because entropy is always increasing?
