Who are the True “Humans of Harriton”?

Influenced by the website “Humans of New York,” a few of our very own Harriton students have taken the initiative to create the amazing Facebook page “Humans of Harriton.”  Humans of New York is a website and blog for which photographer Brandon Stanton takes pictures of and documents interesting quotes by random individuals that he meets in the concrete jungle of New York City.  Whether the subject be a small child or oddly dressed man, Brandon highlights the people that one would generally miss when walking in a large city.

This is the same goal junior Maura Henderson had in mind when creating the idea to start Humans of Harriton with her sister, junior Jane Henderson, and photographers, sophomore Sam Ebby and sophomore Ali Zamsky.  Humans of Harriton highlights students from all grades, social groups, and areas of our school.  They even have snapped photos of some of our administration, including Ms. Marcuson.  Along with the photographs, the subject of the photo will provide a quote they feel is important to them or answer a question posed by the photographers.  Each response, along with the picture, is new and different and allows viewers to see the people of Harriton in a new light.

Growing more popular everyday, this now famous Facebook page has attracted almost every as a new and great way to bring together our Harriton community.  The Harriton Banner is excited to share an in depth look at Humans of Harriton, as we got a chance to talk to some of its creators!

Harriton Banner: Why did you decide to start Humans of Harriton?

Humans of Harriton:  (Maura) Max Norris showed me the Humans of New York page and I thought it was the coolest thing.  I saw LM has one and figured, why not us?  I knew Sam Ebby was awesome at photography, and hoped Jane could help me make fun interviews.  Ali Zamsky heard what we were doing and joined in.

HB: What do you think Humans of Harriton will accomplish at our school?

HOH: Basically my goal with Humans of Harriton is to try and teach people about one another and to learn about someone they might not know.  I think everyone has a story and it would be so cool if we got the chance to learn them.  With our school’s large population, we thought this was a good way to learn about each other.

HB: How do you decide whom to take pictures of?

HOH: We take pictures often of those who would not ask for their picture taken. They deserve for their story to be told.

HB: Do you try to take candid or planned photographs?

HOH: We take a lot of still photos. I personally think we should try and get some candid photos but I am not the photographer and I feel bad taking someone’s photo without them knowing.

HB: What is your favorite part of running Humans of Harriton?

HOH: (Sam) Hearing people’s stories that would otherwise not be heard and making connections that would otherwise not be made.

Make sure to go check out Humans of Harriton on Facebook!
