Around the World with Anabelle: Sanibel Island, Florida
As spring break approaches, people are eagerly talking about their plans, whether they will be sleeping and watching TV at home or jetting off to some exotic, warm destination. For those who want to leave Lower Merion but have not quite figured out where to go, Sanibel Island is the perfect place to unwind with your family. With excellent restaurants, golfing, tennis, fishing, boating, shopping, bike paths, and more; the sandy shores of Sanibel will be the definition of a true vacation.
Upon your arrival at the Casa Ybel Resort, unpack your luggage and take a walk along the sands, which are world-renowned for their shells. You will find hundreds of shells of all colors and sizes. Take some (or many) home as souvenirs! You will spot other people, young and old, gathering their own treasures with buckets, bags, and nets throughout the day.
If you visit Sanibel later, in the fall or winter, the ocean will be chilly. A barefoot walk along the shore will be fine then. However, if you are visiting in the spring (or summer), take a dip in the salty waters! Keep an eye out for dolphins.
Once you have gathered enough shells to last you a lifetime, you might be ready to go for a swim in water warmer than the Gulf of Mexico. Head over to Casa Ybel Resort’s pool! Be sure to make a stop in the hot tub before you leave. If you would like to brighten your day with something a little more fast-paced and exciting, take the short drive down to the town of Captiva. There, you will find various beaches, cool shopping, and great restaurants.
Be sure to stop in the Bubble Room for lunch one day. This might just end up being one of the most interesting restaurant experiences you ever have. The waiters, who call themselves Bubble Scouts, are dressed in extravagant costumes, and colorfully whimsical toys and decorations surround your table. And do not skip dessert – the diverse flavors of rich cake left us craving more the next day. You will want to take home the recipe.
On your way out, head down the road to Bowman’s Beach. It is rated one of the most beautiful beaches in the world for a reason: you will feel at ease watching the sun set on the horizon and listening to the sound of the waves washing onto the shore.
Once you have returned to the Casa Ybel Resort, you might as well try some of the activities offered there. Perhaps you would like to take a boat out, play tennis, bike, or fish. Whatever you choose, you will not be disappointed. Be sure to schedule a guide beforehand if you do end up fishing, and bring jackets – depending on the time of year, it can get freezing cold out on the water.
Sanibel is the perfect place to spend a weekend with your family. From collecting beautiful shells, to eating awesome food into Captiva, to trying something a little sportier, Sanibel Island, Florida, will be the little piece of happiness and serenity in your spring break.
