Are You a Philadelphia Foodie?!
Instagram news feeds are always busy – landscapes, TBHs, birthday posts, “artsy” pictures, hotdogs or legs – the list is endless, yet your feed still seems to leave you hungry for more… Harriton, it is time to feed your feed.
Chances are you have heard of the rapidly growing Instagram account, Philadelphia Foodie, that makes over 12,000 mouths water every day. The account, currently run by Harriton High School senior Amanda Soll, began as a small, local account. In recent months, Philadelphia Foodie has gained thousands of followers, securing its claim to Philly-wide fame.
Amanda took over the account after the founder, Remy Hill, flew to India for a palaak paneer – or semester abroad. “I remember asking her, just out of curiosity, who was going to take over Philadelphia Foodie. Then she tweeted that if people sent her pictures of food, the person who sent her the best pictures would get to manage Philadelphia Foodie,” explained Soll. I didn’t think much of it, but I was like, hmm, I might as well just show her some of my pictures. So I did and she really liked them and ended up giving me the account!”
From Sabrina’s french toast to Kermit’s Bake Shoppe Funfetti cakes, Philadelphia Foodie posts all types of photo-worthy food. Each day, the account posts 2 to 3 pictures of perfectly prepared food from a variety of restaurants and home kitchens. Many Philadelphia Foodie followers submit their own homemade treats and restaurant-served delicacies for publication. Amanda Soll describes how Philadelphia Foodie differs from other foodstagrams.
“So many food accounts just post random pictures of food. And yes, the pictures look delicious and are edited really well, but they don’t really do much for the account’s followers. Philadelphia Foodie not only posts pictures of food that look amazing, but we also give Philadelphians (and whoever else follows the account) information such as what the food is and where they can get it.” Amanda wants the followers to benefit from the account, whether it be by discovering a new Philly restaurant or a treat to try at home.
“The account could be managed relatively easily,” she admits, but Amanda puts in extra time to make sure every restaurant featured is in the Greater-Philadelphia Area and that the followers will genuinely enjoy the food. Needless to say, Instagramers love her for it!
Philadelphia Foodie is growing at a rapid rate, almost 100 followers a day! Amanda and Remy have big plans for the account, like having Philadelphia Foodie featured in Philly Magazine or the Inquirer! They hope to gain followers and expand their reach, even beyond the Philadelphia region. As the account continues to grow, Philadelphia’s avid Instagramers can only hope their appetites can keep up – and that their jeans can still zip!
Looking for a place to eat? Remy and Amanda highly recommend both El Vez and the Reading Terminal Market, where foodies of all levels can surely find something worth posting!
