Mr. Bantoe: Harriton Is Iceland-Bound in Summer 2016!

TNS

There is a rugged, mountainous beauty to the Icelandic coastline. (Molly Born/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette/TNS)

From June 25-30, Mr. Bantoe is taking a group of Harriton students to Iceland. Far from the humid summer woods of Pennsylvania, the travelers will experience exotic waterfalls, geysers and glaciers.

They also plan to learn about Icelandic history and culture. Up until March, interested students still have an opportunity to join the trip. (Stop by Mr. Bantoe’s room across from the breakfast table for more information.)

Could this journey be right for you? We were able to sit down with Mr. Bantoe and gain more insight on the Iceland adventure.

The Harriton Banner: What inspired you to come up with an idea for a trip to Iceland?

Mr. Nyanthen Bantoe: I love to travel and this trip is an opportunity to blend two things that I am really interested in – traveling and science.

HB: Have you hosted other school trips in the past?

NB: No, this trip will be the first that I have hosted, which is why I’m very much looking forward to it!

HB: Will you be hosting other school trips in the future?

NB: Yes, I will. I am looking into future trips to Costa Rica, Belize and South Africa!

HB: Why did you decide on Iceland as the destination?

NB: Iceland has beautiful scenery, a rich history, and presents the opportunity to learn about their practical use of renewable geothermal energy.

HB: What do you hope that students learn while on the trip?

NB: I hope students can develop a desire to study our planet and marvel at its beauty and capabilities. Students will be able to gain firsthand knowledge of scientific processes that they have discussed in their respective classrooms.  They can also use the trip as an opportunity to earn high school or college science course credits.

HB: What are some benefits do you think students will gain from this experience?

NB: They will explore the power and beauty of nature, experience incomparable learning moments, and gain a new appreciation for life.

HB: What kind of student should come to Iceland?

NB: I would recommend any students interested in traveling and science to come on this trip.
