Do it Yourself: Sharpie Mugs

At home, you can always find me with a mug in my hand. Whether I’m drinking tea, coffee, or even just water, chances are, that liquid is housed in a mug. This week, in order to make a personalized and original cup that I can use, I made a Sharpie mug.  Sharpie mugs are super easy to make, and really fun to create because you can design any pattern that you want. I only used three materials! With oil-based Sharpies, not only can you create your own mug, but there are endless possibilities for crafts you can customize: phone cases, dishes, glass cups, and any ceramics. For my mug, I decided to personalize it with my initials. I used stickers and the oil-based Sharpies to create my new mug.

The materials you will need for this project are:

-A white mug (must be oven safe)

-Oil-based Sharpies

-Letter stickers in any font you like

To start the project, place your stickers on the mug to create any word, name, or initial. Next, with your Sharpies, create a design around the stickers. Dots are an easy pattern with the tip of the Sharpie, but any pattern you like is doable. Make sure to go over the edges of the sticker with Sharpie so that the letters are more defined, but other than that, you can design the pattern however you like. Once you are done coloring your mug, preheat the oven to 350˚ F and bake the mug for 30 minutes. This ensures that the Sharpie will last through use and even the dishwasher on the mug. You can put the mug on a baking sheet to keep it steady as opposed to having it on the oven racks, but either option is fine. Let the mug cool completely to prevent cracking, then wash, fill with your favorite beverage, and enjoy!

One thing that I really like about these mugs, is that you can make them for any occasion. Not only can you just make a mug for yourself, they make a great and homemade present. If you’re feeling ambitious, you could even personalize a mug for each member of your family. The possibilities of design are endless with this project, and with the Sharpies you can make many more projects. Enjoy!
