Sonia Groenveld, Student Council Secretarial Candidate
HB: What do you intend to do when you get to office?
SG: I’d love to have advertisements for events, especially Quidditch, and a weekly email to the student body to let them know what is going on each week. The Herd and The Nerd are good but Facebook is dying out and freshmen don’t use it as much. Events need to be spread and there needs to be more student involvement. I think class wars would be really fun because Harriton needs more spirit and more people to be involved. Harriton isn’t just a place you go to school, you also should enjoy high school.
HB: Why are you running for Student Council office?
SG: I love Harriton and I want the ability to make a difference. I’ll be a senior and I want to take more of a leadership role and I know I can do a good job for underclassmen.
HB: What activities are you in beside Student Council and how will that affect your ability to lead and direct the activities of Student Council?
SG: I’m in softball and paddle-tennis and tennis and buildOn. A lot of the activities are in the winter but I would manage my time and make it work.
HB: What do you think are shortcomings of previous officer teams and how do you intend to fix them?
SG: Reaching the entire student body is a challenge for everyone and only a certain number of students are involved. A lot are not involved and part of my campaign is trying to get more kids involved. I really want to bring the student body closer together, Harriton can be cliquey, but reaching to the outskirts will help create a more unified student body.
Sonia Groeneveld is running for secretary against Ibby Maruca, who could not be reached for interview at the time of publication. The Banner does not endorse either candidate. Voting ends 2:40 today, April 12.
