Upcoming Films of 2021
Cinema has flourished over the years, allowing directors to beautifully communicate stories to us through our TV screens and theaters. Movies have always had a powerful impact on society as they manage to elicit all kinds of emotions from people through images, lighting, music, and, most prominently, good casting. From horror to romance, films continue to influence pop culture and inspire people all over the world.
As director Roman Polanski said, “Cinema should make you forget you are sitting in a theater,” and several soon-to-be-released movies are certainly going to do so. So, what are some of the exciting, forthcoming films?
Halloween Kills – Directed by David Gordon Green
Halloween is approaching sooner and sooner, and what better way to celebrate than by watching the sixth Halloween movie, starring actress Jamie Lee Curtis. In the film, Michael Myers is back with his habitual killing sprees, which has wreaked havoc on the small town of Haddonfield throughout the decades. However, in this particular story there is a twist; the former survivor of one of his attacks, Laurie (Curtis), brings the citizens of Haddonfield together to hunt Myers down. This is a perfectly scary film to watch with your friends and family for Halloween, which is coming up in just a few weeks.
Dune – Directed by Denis Villeneuve
The upcoming film Dune is sparking excitement amongst the media, and especially amongst the fans of the talented Timothee Chalamet. Coming out on October 22nd, Dune is an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel, and tells the story of a highly intelligent young man (Chalamet) who travels to a dangerous universe to ensure the survival of his family and people. This movie also stars Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, gems in the film and music industry. With all the captivating elements of action and adventure, this film is bound to be a hit.
West Side Story – Directed by Steven Spielberg
Spielberg’s new film, West Side Story, is anticipated to be added to the list among his other award-winning films. West Side Story, coming out in December, is a colorful and animated adaptation of the 1961 classic. The story follows a romance between two teenagers from very contrasting ethnic backgrounds in 1950s New York City. The movie has a lively soundtrack creating the ideal musical, and charming characters played by Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, and Rita Moreno. Unfortunately, the process of making and releasing the film was delayed due to the pandemic, but the crew still managed to work together to reach their end goal.
To conclude this short but sweet list is another quote from Marjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis: “Cinema is a world of imagination.” It takes a great deal of work, along with an unlimited amount of creativity and imagination, to make a film. It is important for people to explore the world of cinema, because any movie, from a comedy to a drama, can bring a little light into a person’s life.
