There was extensive hype about Superbowl 58, with the Chiefs winning back to back Super Bowls and rumors that Travis Kelce would propose to Taylor Swift; however there was something even more groundbreaking happening that day, something that shook not only spirited Americans, but the entire world.
It is widely known that the commercials are part of the Superbowl experience, but there was one (though not technically a traditional advertisement) that stole the show: the trailer for the new Deadpool movie. This trailer, within its first 24 hours, had over 365 million views, making it the most watched of all time. Though teasers for this trailer were previously released, this was the official trailer– one that no one expected, yet everyone needed.
This third Deadpool film is titled Deadpool & Wolverine, combining the long-followed feud between Ryan Reynolds (who plays Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (who plays Wolverine). Teasers for this feud are published everywhere: within the Deadpool movies themselves, social media publications by two stars, and in promotional materials. However, this movie is the culmination of their rivalry.
After a streak of box office busts such as Madame Web, The Marvels, and Secret Invasion (which aired on Disney+), this new Deadpool promises the needed revival for Marvel. How is Deadpool, a Twentieth-Century Fox character, going to save the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)? That is where the second part of the hype around this trailer originates from. For years, Avengers and X-Men fans alike have been eagerly awaiting a crossover, and the producers of Marvel have acknowledged this in the past. There was a teaser with the Marvel series, Wandavision, where Evan Peters (Quicksilver in the Sony universe) made a guest appearance, but it was nothing more than a cameo to create further anticipation for this merge.
Now it is time for the real deal; Deadpool is the “Marvel Jesus” as he mentions in the trailer. The character, in conjunction with the lore outlined by the Loki series, creates a platform where the two universes merge. It is Marvel’s official announcement of a crossover and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Deadpool & Wolverine is the only Marvel movie being released in 2024, so this is Marvel’s only shot this year to salvage their reputation (which was greatly damaged by the previously mentioned releases and shows such as She-Hulk). The movie’s release date is July 26, 2024 which is right in the middle of the San Diego Comic Con (the largest comic convention in the world). Additionally, this is Marvel’s first rated R film, keeping with the adult comedy and action that has become a staple of the Deadpool films.
The trailer is littered with easter eggs and the excitement is extremely high. Let’s just hope that the comedic and stunt talent from Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds and the execution of this long awaited merge lives up to the world’s hype. Now all we can do is wait and enjoy this incredibly crafted trailer that might change the course of the entire MCU.
