As graduation approaches, so does another general election for Student Council. I recently realized that I did not know much about what Student Council officers do, so I interviewed each of them to find out more about their position. This is my first interview, with Audrey Mariani, the current President:
The Harriton Banner: What is the biggest part of your role in Student Council?
Audrey Mariani: My biggest role is probably communicating with others in and out of the Student Council. Especially during Dr Harriton, there were so many moving parts that required everyone to be hyper communicative, administrators needed to be constantly updated on things, the general Student Council needed to know how they were doing in terms of fundraising, and the student body as a whole needed to be aware of all of our events and activities involving Dr Harriton and other things.
THB: What characteristics do you think are important for this role?
AM: I think some good characteristics for this role are time management and, as I said in the last question, communication. These just ensure that you are being efficient with your time and that you are contributing to a better experience for the student community. Additionally, you really need to be a team player and understand that even though you may be president, everyone else’s opinions on the cabinet and in the club are just as important.
THB: What is your favorite part of being in the Student Council?
AM: My favorite part about Student Council is being involved in the many different activities that go on at Harriton. I think that many people see the things that happen at Harriton, but they don’t get to fully understand the work that goes into the events. I think that seeing a lot of the behind the scenes makes the events more special and even more fun to be a part of.
THB: What do you think were your biggest achievements in Student Council this year?
AM: Our biggest achievement this year is definitely Dr Harriton, but I also feel like bringing back club grants has significantly helped many of the clubs here at Harriton. I think that it has taken some stress off of these clubs and their fundraising needs.
THB: What do you think next year’s Student Council leaders should prioritize?
AM: I think they should prioritize bringing back some of the things that we may have struggled with a little. I am aware that our winter pep rally was not our best work. I hope that next year they can find ways to organize the sports section better and ensure that everyone is recognized and that everyone is enjoying the experience.
