“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” Review

Toula Portokalos and her family are back in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 with yet another wedding! In the sequel to the hit movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), viewers follow Toula and her family as they prepare for another nuptials.

This comical sequel follows many different stories. The main story of the movie is the big, fat, Greek wedding between Toula’s parents, Gus and Maria. Along side the wedding, viewers watch multiple other stories. For example, Toula and her husband, Ian’s attempt to re-spark their romance, Gus’ hunt to figure out his ancestry, and Paris, Toula’s seventeen year old daughter, dealing with her overwhelming family and trying to decide which college she plans to attend. All the stories in the movie have viewers laughing and awing as they watch this Greek chaos of a family’s antics.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is full of comical and heartfelt scenes. Old jokes from the previous movie are brought back, like Gus and his obsession with Windex. Viewers also see old jokes in new ways, for example, how Gus’ grandchildren follow his lead with explaining how every word derives from a Greek word, while other scenes are syrupy and sentimental, such as scene between Paris and her great-grandmother, a perfect example of the many earnest scenes within the movie.

Although the film seemed to end as fast as it started, the swift pace works quite well. The stereotypes in the movie are playful and harmless. The Portokalos family reminds many viewers of their own folks, which just proves why audiences fawn over the series. Not only do they epitomize romantic comedies, they are also incredibly relatable. This sequel can also be applicable to parents and children, with the story of Paris trying to figure out what to do about college. Viewers see Paris struggle with whether or not to leave her family, as Toula and Ian struggle with realizing that she isn’t their little girl anymore, a significant theme for all families.

Although many popular reviewers say that this movie is a train wreck, the audience response has been quite rapturous. It wasn’t hard to see with the amount of giggles filling the theater, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a hit.
