Marina (& The Diamonds) Shines in Philadelphia

On Saturday, November 7, fans left the Electric Factory with sore throats and ringing ears after hearing Marina & The Diamonds sing her heart out. People of all genders and ages went to see her on her Neon Nature Tour.

Upon entering the venue, one could see people with hearts on their cheeks, homage to her Electra Heart (2013) era, and some even had fruits on their heads, in honor of her latest album Froot (2015). Waiting for Marina to appear, everyone impatiently dancing along to the music that was playing, until suddenly the music stopped.

Marina’s band appeared on stage and there was a rush towards the stage as they began to play. Finally, Marina walked onto the stage. The audience immediately recognized her song “Mowgli’s Road” and began to sing along with her.

The concert had three acts, all dedicated to Marina’s three albums. She began with her first album, The Family Jewels (2010). She looked gorgeous in a tight metallic purple playsuit with large pants and two purple balls on her head.

She smiled brightly as the crowd sung every single word along with her. She sang five songs from this album, and the crowd knew every single one. Along with “Mowgli’s Road”, she sang “I Am Not A Robot” and “Obsession,” which she informed everyone was the song that got her signed onto Atlantic Records.

She then played the keyboards as she sang, adding “Oh No”, and “Hollywood” to the set. The crowd screamed when they heard her sing the popular lines, “Oh my God, you look just like Shakira, no no you’re Catherina Zeta, actually, my name’s Marina.”

Then she disappeared from the stage and did a quick outfit change for the Electra Heart act of the concert.

She reappeared wearing a bright pink playsuit and heart on her cheek, singing “Bubblegum B****.” The crowd began singing and jumping along. After finishing the song, Marina dedicated her song “Teen Idle” to the audience.

One highlight of this act was when she charmingly asked the audience “Do you want a lesson in love?” then proceeded to sing her hit “How To Be A Heartbreaker.” There was something magical about hearing the crowd scream together “at least I think I do!”

Next, she brought out a little toy dog she called Marilyn from her last tour to sing “Primadonna.” To end the act, Marina sang “Lies.” Bright white lights shined down on her, making her look angelic as she sang the beautiful song, disappearing backstage.

Marina reappeared for the final act at the top of her stage. The stage was split into two parts, the bottom, where she sang, and the top, above her screen and where her band played. She performed the title track “Froot” wearing a bright green playsuit and a headband that said “Froot” in fluorescent purple.

After singing this, she went back down and sang “Savages,” “Can’t Pin Me Down,” “I’m A Ruin,” “Immortal,” and lastly “Forgot.” Before singing “Forgot,” she told the crowd “This is my ‘last’ song.” She reassured the audience that she was not quite over just yet.

After a few moments of darkness, Marina reappeared on stage.

Her keyboard had been brought out again. She thanked everyone for coming out then sang the song, “Happy.”

To finish the night, she and the crowd danced and sang “Blue.” She and the audience were left with smiling faces by the end of the night. The only issues that made a difference were the sound problems, as the mic was a little too soft. However, the crowd made up for that by singing along to every single word.
