The Billboard Hot 100: Top 3 Singles

Three hit singles, “Wrecking Ball,” “Roar,” and “Royals” currently dominate the Billboard Hot 100. Miley Cyrus, who recently stunned viewers with her VMA performance and release of the song “We Can’t Stop”, sings the first of the three. “Wrecking Ball” was first discovered by the YouTube community when she released the music video on September 9th.  The video contains certain graphic images including Cyrus swinging naked on top of a wrecking ball and licking a sledgehammer. Despite this, it broke the Vevo six day record with 100 million views. Even though, visually, the video is slightly disturbing and unattractive, the song itself features killer vocals and a pounding beat matching a passionate chorus that is impossible not to put on replay. Although a bit “angsty” and a tad whiny, the catchy beat gives listeners a reason everywhere to make it number one, having it get stuck in their heads until they hear the second hit single.

“Roar” was released alongside its lyric video on August 12th. Featuring a text message conversation depicting the lyrics with emoticons and miscellaneous background art, Katy Perry starts off this song with a pounding drum line and irresistible beat. She launches into the powerful chorus with the strum of a guitar chord, keeping her voice strong and steady until putting emphasis on the last parts of her chorus. The message brings strength to people struggling to find their voices everywhere, especially girls who were put down by other people. The strength in the lyrics makes them unforgettable. When put together with the awesome tempo, you get a single that’s earned its place in the Top 3. It’s a song that you’ll be completely in love with, until you hear number three.

“Royals” is featured in Ella Yeilech-O’Connor’s — better known by her stage name, Lorde — debut Love Club EP. The slow, steady beat alongside the sound of snapping, paired with the sound of Lorde’s thick, full voice, creates an awesome song for when you just couldn’t care less. The jam launches into a chorus full of strong, low vocals. “And we’ll never be royals,” she hums in her slightly accented singing voice. “Royals” is featured in her debut EP along with the songs “Bravado,” “The Love Club,” “Million Dollar Bills,” and “Biting Down.” The US version of her music video came out as her first VEVO video on June 18th, 2013, which has over 13,000,000 views as of this date. The other version of the video is featured on her other channel, LordeMusic, and was posted on May 12th, 2013. It currently has over 11,782,961 views.

These songs are taking the world by storm.  If you start humming one of the tunes, someone will, no doubt, recognize it.
