“Frozen” Review

Disney’s new animated feature, Frozen, is definitely one of the coolest movies to hit the box office this season. Without giving too much away, Frozen is loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale called The Snow Queen. Set in a landscape that is vaguely Scandinavian, Frozen engages its viewers’ eyes, ears, and hearts.

Just like every Disney movie, the first notable aspect of Frozen is its plethora of catchy, memorable tunes.  From the bittersweet “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” to the stirring anthem “Let It Go,” many of the songs were stuck in my head long after I left the theater. The film features the vocals of Idina Menzel (known for her roles in Wicked, Rent, Enchanted, and Glee).  All of her songs are knockouts.

Of course, Disney movies are always packed with humor, and Frozen is no exception. One source of silliness is a little, enchanted snowman named Olaf. He can talk, walk, and of course — sing.  His big showcase solo, “In Summer,” is filled with hilarious irony about what a snowman can do in the summer.

With gorgeous illustrations of the vast, snow-covered landscapes, along with the quirky characters and impressive architecture, Frozen certainly scores some points in the visual department. Even when Arendelle (the kingdom in the film) is not in a wintry landscape, the rolling hills and colorful town enhance the background.

Despite the music, animation, and characters that appeal to younger audiences, Frozen isn’t just a cliché Disney movie.  This film focuses on the importance of family, and not just a sugarcoated story of true love.  Go see it!
