Vampire Academy Film Review

Richelle Mead came out with her book, Vampire Academy, in 2007. It was a hit, and following it came her series, including books such as Frost Bite and Blood Promise.  Finally, in 2014, the film many fans were waiting for finally came out. Although most movie adaptions are not the best, this one stayed honest to most of the characters and story line.

Rose the Dhampir (half-human, half-vampire protector of the royal bloodline) sticks to her sassy, dangerous, and witty persona. Lissa Dragomir (a Moroi, or mortal vampire whom Rose is sworn to protect) is just as defiant and yet also dependent on Rose. Even though she seems tough, she is frail — as she is in the books. Rose’s trainer, Dimitri, lives up to his tall and dark depiction, and their semi-raunchy, flirtatious relationship is clearly prominent throughout Rose’s lessons.

Although there are a few somewhat childish lines scattered throughout, (e.g., “I’ll fire-magic you into ashes!” or ”Whatever, I’ll just water-magic myself before you can!”) and a few cheesy pick-up lines, it does not lack main plot points or the important character portrayals. It is full of action with Rose kicking some Strigoi (the evil, immortal vampire) butt. Rose’s loyalty is very prominent throughout the entire movie, even though it sometimes fluctuates.

All in all, the film was quality.  It is certainly an interesting movie for those who have a love for the mystical or supernatural. If you have read the books, I definitely encourage you to go see it and judge for yourself — this is only one viewer’s idea of how it was put together.
