The Kin Concert at World Café Live

This past month, World Café Live had the pleasure of hosting The Kin. Although they are not particularly famous and not like most bands, they themselves and their two opening acts took the stage by storm with perfect vocals and awesome drum beats.

Oh Honey was the first opening act.  The lead singer and guitarist, Mitchy Collins, definitely had a sense of humor that made the crowd laugh, and although co-member Danielle Bouchard seemed a bit nervous beside him, she rocked the stage with both her voice and her outfit. They sound similar to Of Monsters and Men with their vocals, but jumpier, significantly louder, and more energetic. Their song, “I Love You Will Still Sound the Same,” had a very special meaning to the band because it was played at their friend’s wedding, and the music video featured on YouTube contains actual footage from the ceremony. Their EP, With Love, can be bought on iTunes, and is definitely worth the small amount of money you would pay for it.

Finish Ticket was the second opening act.  The main vocalist, Brendan Hoye, sounded a bit like Nicholas Petricca of Walk the Moon.  But, overall, Finish Ticket had a somewhat different sound — smoother and a bit softer than Walk the Moon. Even though it didn’t seem that way when the drums were pounding from speakers and shaking the audience’s ribcages, they still have a soothing and alternative sound that makes the beats all the more appealing. They opened their performance with “In the Summer,” followed by “Catch You on The Way Out” and “Bring the Rain.” Even as it got louder and louder inside of the Café, the band’s raw talent was clear. Their album, Tears You Apart, features eleven tracks and every one is worth a listen — definitively worth checking out.

Finally, The Kin came on stage. Of course, they sound even better live, with brothers Isaac and Thorald, and their drummer, Shakerleg. Shakerleg has the most amazing drum — using nothing but his hands, and sometimes a set of keys. The brothers sing like literal angels. They have smooth, soulful voices, with melodious harmonies and amazing lyrics. The entire concert was much more intimate than most — being in such close quarters with the band, and making eye contact. They took up their old ways as Isaac went around the crowd and yelled, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a musical robbery!” They did this in Brooklyn, randomly walking into locations with Thorald holding a guitar and singing to gain followers. Shakerleg used keys to strike a music case and they walked in circles singing “Mary,” “Abraham,” and many songs. They have had quite a few albums out, including Rise and Fall and The Upside. Their newer songs (such as those on the Get On It EP) are more upbeat and lean towards the alternative genre more so than their usual “singer-songwriter” tendencies.

All three of the bands were fantastic, and if you like Walk the Moon, Of Monsters and Men, (or good music in general), I sincerely and highly suggest at least listening to one of these songs: “Be Okay” and “I Love You Will Still Sound the Same” by Oh Honey; “Killing Me,” “Bring the Rain,” and “Catch You On My Way Out” by Finish Ticket; “Abraham,” “Mary,” and “Animals” by The Kin.
