Harriton Jukebox: Chvrches’ The Bones of What You Believe

Formed in 2011, this Scottish electronic music band has three key members —Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals), Iain Cook (synths, guitar, bass), and Martin Doherty (synths, samplers). They have just recently released a new album, The Bones of What You Believe, and the style consists of an electronic-alternative mix with a dash of eighties sound. There are twelve tracks, starting with “The Mother We Share,” a pre-released single.

“The Mother We Share” is definitely a highlight of the album, with a fun jump-up-and-down but surprisingly semi-serious beat and eerie lyrics that you do not really notice because of the happy tone. “We Sink” is the next track, which is a melodic song with all three band members singing and they fit together almost perfectly.

The best tracks on the album are “Lies,” “Recover,” “Science/Visions,” and “Lungs.” All sound extremely unique in the way they are written and constructed. For someone who is always looking for something new to listen to, it is interesting to hear a band like this mixing it up with some old style as well as some new. There is definitely potential in the band and their music.

The fact that the album and the music have a continuous theme of partly eighties inspired electronic may hold the ban back on the rest it has to offer, but the fact that each song is a little bit different and interesting in its own way is definitely their strength. The way the band blends the beats and different noises as well as intriguing vocals will definitely make it a band you have never heard anything like before.

However, if you like HAIM, Lorde, Phantogram, or just want to listen to something completely different (like bands that are dipping back into some vintage tunes), give these guys a listen.
