The Royals (new Channel E scripted series) Review

If you haven’t seen any trailers, sneak peaks, or episodes of The Royals you are missing out. This new series is the first scripted show channel E has ever produced. The show follows a fictional, royal family who rules England. Some viewers have even made comments that they think this show is a modern Hamlet. In fact it does have similar plot lines to Shakespeare’s famous play. However, The Royals is what many would call a classic E show; it has romance, scandal, cursing, blackmail, drugs, partying, and sex.

In the series premiere, we are introduced to this new family. Queen Helena is the controlling mom and ruler who wants to have a say in every decision. Viewers can tell that the Queen loves the power she has. Her husband, King Simon, on the other hand, wants to abolish the monarchy because he thinks that it has torn previous families’ lives apart and he doesn’t want that to happen to his family. The Queen and King have three children: Prince Robert, who tragically dies in the first episode; Princess Eleanor, who is a party animal; and Prince Liam, who ends up next in line to the throne when his older brother Robert dies.

In this first episode, viewers are also introduced to the King’s head-of-security, Ted, and his daughter Ophelia, whose mom passed away years before. Ophelia starts a relationship with Prince Liam, but the Queen quickly tries to end it because she doesn’t want her son dating the help (see the Hamlet connection?). However, like all good fictional romances, forbidden love always prevails.

The second episode continues to follow the craziness that seems to plague this royal family. Viewers get to see what makes the Queen and King tick and what makes Ophelia and Liam’s relationship flourish. Per necessity, some blackmail and cheating even goes on. In order to know what happens next, make sure you watch, The Royals, on E on Sundays at 10 pm!
