Kiss Me Quick, More Like Don’t Kiss Me At All

Soon after leaving boy band “The Wanted”, Nathan Sykes pursued his dream of becoming a solo artist by releasing his debut song “Kiss Me Quick”. The jacket of the song depicts Sykes playfully laughing in black and white. This warm picture invites listeners to take part in Sykes’ single. On the back of the jacket is a concise summary about “Kiss Me Quick” and Nathan Sykes in general. Overall, the appealing outside tempts buyers to take the song home.

After scrutinizing the song’s enticing jacket, just one question remained. Would “Kiss Me Quick” be as good as its cover? Simply put no, it did not live up to its expectations. “Kiss Me Quick” was another duplicate of every other song in the Pop industry that focuses on the teen urge for intimacy. The song’s main theme was about flirting, another cliché topic you see too much in pop songs. In addition to that, Sykes’ lyrics were very rudimentary and boring. In one part of the song he sings, “ You got me hooked on your P.D.A”. P.D.A is a term you would only hear in a classroom! Subsequently, “Kiss Me Quick” is also mind-numbingly repetitive. The band reiterates the same figure excessively and one might wonder how it doesn’t drive Sykes mad. Furthermore, Sykes continues to ruin the song by adding redundant vocal elements such as his over use of falsetto. When falsetto is used properly in a song it can captivate listeners, but when overused it turns them away. Despite the song’s appalling lyrics and unoriginality, “Kiss Me Quick” does a great job using its large horn section to echo Sykes’ melodies. Sadly, that is the only aspect of the song I enjoy.

Although “Kiss Me Quick” is definitely lacking in most areas, it does have a compelling music video. It mostly features Nathan singing in front of a black and white background. Occasionally Sykes is dancing and the band joins him in the video. In every section of the video, he is the main focus and the video does a good job of capturing his stylish attire. Basically if you turned the music off and just watched the music video, “Kiss Me Quick” would not be as bad.

Overall, the song was not enjoyable and frankly, it was a waste of time. Nathan Sykes is nothing more than a Justin Timberlake wannabe and a failed solo artist. It is highly recommended to never listen to any of Sykes’ songs now or in the future. Finally, on the back of the outside of the disk the blurb states that in addition to this single, Sykes plans to release a full album. It is safe to say for those who struggle through “Kiss Me Quick” that they will definitely not be busting down doors to get the new album.
