Wicked star Ariana Grande recently made headlines with her act of kindness toward a young fan, Brielle Bird, a 9 year old from Idaho who is battling cancer. Brielle has gained quite a following on social media with her posts about her experience living with neuroblastoma, a rare type of cancer that grows in nerve cells.
Brielle’s family have been sharing updates online about her illness for about five years, showing both the good and bad days; from rounds of chemo to bone marrow transplants and radiation. In January 2025, they announced Brielle’s cancer had spread.
Ariana Grande connected with Brielle in August 2025, when she sent her a care package filled with Wicked themed merch (Wicked is one of Brielle’s favorite musicals). The gift basket included makeup, perfume, plush toys, and a personal video message from Grande: “Hi Brie! It’s Ariana…I was inspired to put together this little care package for you. I hope you love it…[you are] the most amazing, most inspiring little light beam in this universe…”
Brielle posted about getting the package and her reaction to it on Instagram, to the delight of her million followers and to Ariana Grande fans worldwide.
It was a small, heartwarming moment in a tragic time.
When celebrities do something to help people in need, it often ends up in the news. Their acts are typically grand and impressive, but that can also make their actions feel far away from regular people. But Grande’s act of kindness should serve as a reminder that fame is not a requirement for compassion.
The power of Grande’s gesture was not due to her fame, it was due to her thoughtfulness. It attracted attention because both Grande and Brielle are famous. Everyone can show kindness, even without a platform or a fan base. A kind word to a classmate, holding the door for someone whose hands are full, or just saying hello might not make headlines, but it can still make someone’s day a little brighter or easier.
Grande’s gesture inspired even more kindness. After seeing how moved Brielle was by Grande’s Wicked themed gifts, Wicked director Jon M. Chu and Universal Pictures arranged an early private screening of Wicked: For Good, the second and final installment of the franchise (scheduled for release November 21, 2025), for Brielle and her family.
Ariana Grande’s one moment of kindness evolved into another, showing how compassion builds on itself. What began as a thoughtful gift became a shared effort to bring joy to a young fan in the last months of her life. This is a great reminder that when someone acts kindly, others often follow. Kindness does not need an audience to matter. Even the quietest acts can make a difference.
