A Favorite Thanksgiving Recipe

Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where everyone has a favorite dish. Some people love the stuffing, some love the delectable vegetables, and others love the desserts. Many of these recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. My brother, William Willkomm, a Harriton High School graduate, loves everything related to Thanksgiving food. His absolute favorite dish is my mother’s pumpkin pie.

For the past 12 years, my mother has been baking this mouth-watering pumpkin pie, which my brother adores so much. Even though it has been a yearly tradition for over a decade, it is not in the family recipe book. Instead this glorious recipe is found on the back of Libby’s by Nestle, 100% pure canned pumpkin. The recipe calls for:

  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish pie crust
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ ground cloves
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 (15 ounce) can LIBBY’s® 100% Pure Pumpkin
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can NESTLE® CARNATION® Evaporated Milk

The instructions for this recipe are as follows:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Combine sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves in small bowl. Beat eggs lightly in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin and sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. Pour into pie shell.
  3. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F.; bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until a knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours. Serve immediately or refrigerate. (Do not freeze as this will cause the crust to separate from the filling.)

In addition to this recipe my mother loves to create decorative dough leaves on top of the pie. This recipe is my brother’s all time favorite, that he even asks for it on his birthday. People across the country who love Thanksgiving food all have one favorite dish; what’s yours?
