The Kirti monastery, located in Sichuan Province, China, has long been intertwined with the Tibetan uprising of spring 2008. Kirti was a center for Tibetan protesters and has been the site of several self-immolations protesting Chinese rule. Phuntsog Kalsang, 20, a monk of Kirsti, became the first monk to commit suicide by self-immolation on March 16th. Last Monday, September 26th, two other monks from the monastery, one the brother of Phuntsog, set themselves on fire. Lobslang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok allegedly shouted “Long live the Dalai Lama!” right before they committed self-immolation. The monks are currently in a Chinese hospital in an unknown condition.
