AP US Government Classes Hold Election Night Party

On Tuesday, November 6th, about forty students enrolled in AP US Government and Politics gathered at Harriton High School to watch the election unfold.

Hosted by AP Government teachers Mr. Santa Maria and Mr. Callahan, the affectionately-termed ‘Election Party’ kicked off at 5:30 with a showing of The War Room, a documentary chronicling the 1992 Bill Clinton Presidential campaign. Considered the first modern campaign, Clinton’s ’92 presidential bid was plagued with ups and downs and allowed students to compare campaigns that occurred years apart.

At the movie’s conclusion, the party was moved to Mr. Callahan’s room, where the group watched the live election broadcast as the votes rolled in. In what is probably the first presidential election that many students have been fully conscious of and able to understand, this enthusiastic group analyzed projections and made conjectures of their own with commentary and insight provided from these two teachers.

Sophomore Emily Braverman describes this input as one of the most valuable aspects of the party, as Mr. Callahan and Mr. Santa Maria “knew exactly what they’re talking about and their opinion on what was happening was always interesting to hear.” Fellow Sophomore Dan Liu describes his Election Party experience as “pretty good.”

This once-in-four-years Election Party inevitably ended at 10:30, about two hours before the election would be conclusively decided. Both a great learning experience and a fun social event, the Party was a success by any measure.
