Meteor Sighting In Russia

On February 15, around 9:20 a.m., a meteor zoomed across the sky near Chelyabinsk in the Ural Mountains in Russia. The meteor had an effect strong enough to shatter glass. It injured 900 people, 43 seriously enough to require hospitalization.

A small asteroid or a chunk of a comet is thought to have caused this Russian meteor. The Emergencies Ministry’s division in the Urals district collected observations, also noting that burning streaks lit up the sky. Gennady Onishchenko, Russia’s chief of Public Health, closed schools in the Chelyabinsk region.

Radiation is currently at normal levels, with power systems working as usual, noted the Emergencies Ministry, though the meteor caused 20,000 emergency staff and three aircrafts to be deployed in the region.

In a final statement, the Emergencies Ministry said that “no further pieces of the meteor are expected to fall.”

In addition to the meteor flying across Russia, the asteroid 2012 DA14, passed planet Earth later that afternoon, although at a distance far enough to call no notice.
