Gems Not Genocide Donates $8,000

For the past few years, Harriton High School has sponsored the non-profit, student-run organization called Gems Not Genocide, whose primary goals are to raise awareness regarding the horrific genocide within Darfur and accumulate donations to relieve as many repercussions resulting from the genocide as possible. The students who run Gems are Abri Bernstein, Lindsey Barrison, Samantha Braver, Nikki Silfen, and Jenny Langer. The staff advisor is Mr. Imaizumi. So far, Gems Not Genocide has acquired over 10,000 dollars through various fundraisers and events. They continue to plan future opportunities to raise money for their cause. To symbolize their efforts, the club recently presented a check for 8,000 dollars to Megan Higginbotham of the Darfur Dream Team on October 10th, 2013. The proceeds will be employed to purchase school supplies for students in the Goz Amer refugee camps located in Chad, which currently house nearly 27,000 adolescent refugees. Prior to receiving the generous donation, Megan spoke to the club’s active members about the Darfur Dream Team, specifying their work on the Sister Schools Program. Above all, the Darfur Dream Team’s overarching goals are to inform society and provide funding to alleviate the eminent catastrophe within Darfur. Hopefully, with the achievements of both the Darfur Dream Team and Gems Not Genocide, the calamitous consequences resulting from the genocide within Darfur will lessen.
